Spring Into Action: Chores, Maintenance, and the Joy of Stewardship This April

Writer: Ashley StricklandAshley Strickland

April is here, and with it comes the perfect time for some spring cleaning—both inside and outside your home! As we celebrate Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it’s also a great reminder that new life isn’t just for us spiritually, but for our homes as well. It’s time to breathe new life into your property by tackling some essential spring chores and maintenance!

But don’t worry—we’re not just talking about the basics. We’re going to cover some tasks homeowners often forget and offer up a few tools and cleaning solutions that will have your house looking—and feeling—refreshed in no time.

Spring Cleaning Chores Every Homeowner Should Tackle:

  1. Dust and Clean Your Baseboards Baseboards often go unnoticed. They’re there, but no one really talks about them and let's be honest, we rarely clean them! Take a damp cloth to wipe away dust and grime. You’ll be amazed at how fresh your home looks after this simple task.

  2. Deep Clean Your Windows When was the last time you cleaned your windows? If you can’t remember, it’s time to get to work. Clean windows let the sunlight in, making your home feel brighter and more inviting.

  3. Vacuum and Flip Your Mattresses You’ve probably been lying on it without a second thought. Now, flip your mattress and vacuum away any dust, crumbs, or stray socks (no judgment). It’s the perfect way to keep things fresh—and who doesn’t want a good night’s sleep!

  4. Organize Closets and Storage Spaces Spring is the season of new beginnings, so it’s time to clear out the clutter! Sort through those closets and donate items you no longer use. Trust me, it’s like spring cleaning for your soul—and your wardrobe.

  5. Wash the Walls and Doors You’d be surprised at how much dirt and grime build up on walls and doors. Grab a microfiber cloth and a gentle cleaning solution to scrub away years of unseen filth.

Home and Property Maintenance Most People Forget About:

  1. Clean Your Gutters Spring storms are coming, and those gutters better be ready. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage, so clean them out before it rains. You don’t want your home "overflowing" with problems when a little prevention could’ve kept things flowing smoothly.

  2. Inspect Your Roof This one is often neglected—until the first leak appears! Check for loose shingles or any signs of wear and tear. A roof over your head is a blessing, so let’s keep it in good shape.

  3. Check Exterior Drainage If water isn’t draining away from your foundation, it’s only a matter of time before you have a damp situation on your hands. Check for standing water near your home and make sure the ground slopes away to keep moisture from creeping in.

  4. Service Your HVAC System Before you crank up the AC this summer, get your HVAC system checked and cleaned. Change the filters and have a professional inspect it.

  5. Seal Windows and Doors Weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors often wear down over time. Check for drafts and re-seal where necessary. It’ll keep your home more energy-efficient—and your utility bills lower.

Essential Tools and Cleaning Solutions:

  • Microfiber Cloths: These are perfect for dusting, cleaning windows, and even wiping down walls. They grab dirt without scratching and can be washed and reused.

  • Magic Erasers: Great for scrubbing off tough marks on walls and doors. It’s like having a tiny miracle worker in your hand.

  • All-Purpose Cleaner: A good, natural all-purpose cleaner (like one made with vinegar or essential oils) can do wonders for most surfaces without harsh chemicals.

  • Gutter Scoop: A small tool designed to help you scoop out leaves and debris from your gutters. You'll thank us when it saves you from a soggy basement!

  • Vacuum with HEPA Filter: If you have allergies, a vacuum with a HEPA filter is a game-changer for deep cleaning carpets, mattresses, and upholstery.

Biblical Inspiration:

As we care for our homes, it's important to remember that being a good steward of what God has entrusted to us is part of our calling. In Luke 16:10, Jesus reminds us, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much...” Our homes, possessions, and even our time are gifts from God, and taking good care of them is part of honoring Him. A little spring cleaning and maintenance can go a long way in making your home a place of peace and renewal. May your efforts this April reflect the joy of the resurrection and the good stewardship we’re all called to as we honor God in every area of life—one clean corner at a time!
